Methods for studying allometry in geometric morphometrics: a comparison of performance

چکیده

Abstract Allometry has been the focus of growing interest in studies using geometric morphometric methods to address a wide range research questions at interface ecology and evolution. This study uses computer simulations compare four for estimating allometric vectors from landmark data: multivariate regression shape on measure size, first principal component (PC1) shape, PC1 conformation space, recently proposed method, Boas coordinates. Simulations with no residual variation around relationship showed that all are logically consistent one another, up minor nonlinearities mapping between space tangent space. In included variation, either isotropic or pattern independent allometry, size performed consistently better than shape. The PC1s coordinates were very similar close simulated under conditions. An extra series elucidate relation indicated they almost identical, marginal advantage conformation. Empirical examples ontogenetic allometry rat skulls rockfish body illustrate simple biological applications methods. paper concludes recommendations how these can be used evolution ecology.

Geometric morphometrics reveals sex-differential shape allometry in a spider

Common scientific wisdom assumes that spider sexual dimorphism (SD) mostly results from sexual selection operating on males. However, testing predictions from this hypothesis, particularly male size hyperallometry, has been restricted by methodological constraints. Here, using geometric morphometrics (GMM) we studied for the first time sex-differential shape allometry in a spider (Donacosa merl...

Three-dimensional geometric morphometrics for studying floral shape variation.

Variation in floral shape is of major interest to evolutionary and pollination biologists, plant systematists and developmental geneticists. Quantifying this variation has been difficult due to the three-dimensional (3D) complexity of angiosperm flowers. By combining 3D geometric representations of flowers obtained by micro-computed tomography scanning with geometric morphometric methods, well ...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Geometric Morphometrics

The field of morphometrics is developing quickly and recent advances allow for geometric techniques to be applied easily to many zoological problems. This article briefly introduces geometric morphometric techniques and then reviews selected areas where those techniques have been applied to questions of general interest. This article is relevant to non-specialists looking for an entry into geom...
